Review: Jerry Lee Lewis - Mean Old Man [Deluxe Edition]

The first impression I got of the album was that the title was all wrong, a better title would have been Dirty Old Man, just look at the cover(!) Jerry Lee surrounded by at last 55 year younger women...
The album consists of a very mixed set of songs, mainly country ballads and some rock n roll classics also including song that Jerry Lee already have recorded previously, like Middle Aged Crazy. Like the previous album (Last Man Standing) this album consists of duets with famous singers. What at least I thought worked in the previous album, with these guest stars doesn't really work on this release, with a few exceptions like Middle Aged Crazy with Tim McGraw and Jon Brion.

The deluxe edition also includes some tracks with just Jerry Lee on the vocals and these tracks just add to the feeling that this album could have been so much better with just Jerry Lee Lewis, The Killer and maybe some more takes of the songs, because some of them really sounds like they've just taken the first take and released that (for example Roll Over Beethoven). Knowing Jerry Lee that wouldn't be that big of a surprise, Jerry never liking to record in the studio especially during his late years.
For a Jerry Lee Lewis fan there is reason to get this record and most of the tracks are enjoyable, for the casual listener however I wouldn't recommend this record. There is a lot better albums in the Killers catalog, like Last Man Standing.

  1. Nice record. Not very special, but nice. It's a little dull maybe. There was one song with a great sounding chord progression in the intro and the end. It reminded me of Dylan's Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands and that kind of ballads with a spiritual sound. Jerry Lee's singing is still great here.
